Drug rehabilitation in New York

TYPE OF REHABS

Twelve steps: The Twelve Step program is a time tested Method and procedure of recovery from various obsessive-compulsive behaviors which the individuals believe have made them unmanageable.  These tools for living have been used by millions of people to successfully change their lives and recover from negative and even life threatening behaviors.  They are based on a set of Spiritual (not religious) principles originally created by Alcoholics Anonymous in the United States in 1935.  Anonymity as a Spiritual principle is the underpinning of the Twelve-Step way of life.  Sharing and supporting in groups with like-minded individuals and ongoing fellowship is a major ingredient in the success of the program.

The twelve steps address different "problems" such as Alcohol abuse, Drug abuse, overeating abuse, gambling etc.

Long term religious based program

The idea is to get the person out of his environment and to get him into a hard work camp with a religious concept and get the person back in contact with god. A small percentage of individual completes the program. The programs can be based on jewish, christian religion etc.

Behavioral modification :

Those program is based on trying to break the person up. To break is character trough peer pressure and it relies on telling the person that they are bad and degrading as an individual. The concept is to break the spirit into something that can be rebuilt. Sometimes it works as a small percentage will rebuild into a harmless person.

Biophysical Treatment:

This method of Treatment addresses the biophysical and biochemical imbalances with a sauna program that eliminates toxins from the body, to eliminate cravings. It includes a social educational program to learn life skills that will bring a person to be able to tackle life’s many hardships and be on top of hid life. Not being affected by it. As part of the skills is to learn to communicate properly and practicing it then learning about personalities and the traits of each one as well as being able to associate with the good people and recognize people that can be harmful for the individual. A large part is the ability to live life based on ones personal views and skills but within the morals of society.

This culminates with the person applying these skills to repair the damage of the things that are holding them back in life now. The things that quite often are form earlier in life that need to be repaired now so you can be free to live a happy and Drug free productive life.

The final stage is made specifically for the individual and it is made after the case manager has been able to see what the individual needs to work on in order to achieve success.

This Method is successful. It brings the person to be a happy, productive, Drug free member of society.

Heroin, cocaine, cannabis and MDMA are frequently smuggled into New York from Canada.

New York has 9 land ports of entry along its 400-mile border with Canada.

New York has two international seaports – Port of New York/New Jersey and Port of Buffalo/Niagara. Narcotic trafficking organizations frequently smuggle illicit drugs into New York using maritime vessels.

According to the U.S. Customs Service, between $4 and $8 billion generated from illegal drug sales is laundered in the New York metropolitan area annually.

Over 132,000 individuals died as a consequence of alcohol and drug problems in 1992. Of these fatalities, 107,400 were related to alcohol abuse and 25,500 were related to narcotic abuse. The approximated costs were $31.3 billion and $14.6 billion, respectively, representing the current discounted value of expected lifetime earnings (discounted at 6 percent). The average loss per fatality was almost $350,000 (nonetheless, the average loss per drug-related fatality was almost twice as high as for alcohol due to different average ages of decedents). The costs using a 3-percent discount rate are $45.7 billion and $21.3 billion, respectively. Several of the alcohol- and drug-related fatalities were among individuals between ages 20 and 40, because the major causes of fatality, such as motor vehicle crashes, other causes of traumatic death, and HIV infection, are concentrated among younger age cohorts. Nonetheless, alcohol is also involved in several premature deaths among the older population because of long-term, excessive alcohol consumption. As far as premature fatalities are concerned, this study found only modest disparities from the study by Rice et al. (1990), except that the number of fatalities associated with drug-related HIV increased dramatically from 1985 to 1992 - a substantial increase in the cost of drug abuse.
